Bach, Concerto in E flat for Viola and Piano (Barenreiter)
Reconstruction after the Cantatas BWV 169 and 49 and the Concerto for Harpsichord in E-flat major BWV 1053.
The present Concerto in E-flat major for Viola, Strings and Basso continuo is the reconstruction of a lost concerto that has only come down to us in the for of two arrangements made by Bach himself: the Harpischord Concerto in E Major and three cantata movements with obbligato organ. Unlike all previous attempts to recover the concerto in its original form, Barenreiter's reconstruction proceeds on the assumption that the piece was originally written for viola.
