Lugunum Violin from the Laberte-Humbert Workshop Mirecourt c. 1900

This violin is labeled Lugunum, and was made in the workshop of Laberte-Humbert in Mirecourt in the early 20th century. The Laberte-Humbert firm was established in 1876 and was one of the main Mirecourt workshops producing violins in the early 20th Century. They produced a very large number of instruments under a number of different names and labels, and at their height in the 1920's employed over 400 people. 

The violin is labelled "Marque Déposée / Lugdunum / Anno 1910". The body measures 358mm along the back, 166mm across the upper bouts and 205mm across the lower bouts. It has a two-piece back of well-flamed maple with a broad curl, the ribs and scroll have been selected well to match the back, and the top is a spruce of an even growth. It is finished with honey-amber varnish and rosewood pegs. It is in good condition. 

It has a warm, energetic sound, with an articulate point to it. This combines the sweet sound classic to most French instruments from this era with a broader character, which helps to mellow it out. It is quite easy to play, and opens up well when asked for more intense colours, possessing quite a deep quality when pushed to louder dynamics. It is well balanced across all registers, and would be well suited to a player doing their tertiary study in violin.
