Maple, Spruce and Ebony (Keith Sharp) for String Orchestra

‘Maple, Spruce and Ebony’ is a stylised fiddle tune for string orchestra with touches of Baroque dance, Mozart figuring and blended folk music styles. All parts are engaging to play. The tempo can be moderate or more lively depending on the skill level of the ensemble. The ternary structure brings an elegant contrast to the joyous main theme, and subtle variation on the return. The rhythmic figures in both sections encourage exploration of both energised and shaped bow strokes, coupled with comfortable coordination challenges of string crossing and lively passages. A favourite, first up!
