Two Silk Screens from Kyoto (Stephen Chin) for String Orchestra

I was inspired to write these two pieces from a visit to Japan some years ago. They are just a little snapshot of so many exquisite memories of such a beautiful country. The wistful elegance of cranes in the wilderness wandering on a lake’s edge is contrasted with the dynamic and athletic movements of samurais in action. The use of the Japanese scale, Hirajōshi and other pentatonic scales are used frequently throughout the set.

1. Cranes
2. Samurais
