It's from a children's rhyme from the Dark Ages when a man named Tom was hung for murdering children and the villagers left his body hanging in the tree refusing to bury him so that his soul would never rest in peace. The eventual hanging bones inspired the local children's chant, which over the centuries turned to song.Ā
